Can people actually change?
My friend recommended the show "Secret Level" on Amazon Prime. It's a series of very short films based off video game worlds which is surprisingly good. Episode 3 is about a king, Aelstrom, who when on a conquest of lands--shipwrecks with one of his subjects whom has a missing left hand. Be advised: the entire episode is spoiled ahead!
Aelstrom quickly springs to action and begins to act like he always has, sure of himself. Just as quick as he sets off in this new land he dies from a fight to a peasant. However, he springs back to life. He then finds out that he's in a land of eternal life. So he goes to seek out the ruler of the kingdom and claim his throne.
Once he meets the king, he dies. Over and over and over. For many years he seeks out fighting this king and he always dies and is sprung back to life where he arrived from the shipwreck. Aelstrom even seeks out a pact with a sorcerer who gives him a full set of dark and glowing armor. When Aelstrom returms to fight the king with this new armor--he still loses.
The king, frustrated drops his crown and says "I'm tired of fighting you, Aelstrom". Aelstrom picks up the crown and runs away to the shore. He then has a period of reflection and melts down his crown to smith a prosthetic mechanical arm. He then gives the arm to his previous armless subject. And the episode concludes.
This is where I think that the authors want you to think about how people can always change given enough chances. However, I picked up a different message. What if people don't ever change their personality? What if Aelstrom will always desire conquest? I think that this new land broke Aelstrom. That it shaped Aelstrom to stop picking up what he truly wanted and instead just grab whatever he can get--in this case, his former subject as a friend.
